Sofie van Thiel (1997) is a Rotterdam-based artist working primarily with the medium of painting. Since graduating from the Willem de Kooning Academy in 2022 with her series ‘Senses in Transition’, her work deals with translating daily impressions and feelings to paint. The results are intimate conversions of raw emotion through intuitive brush strokes, pushing herself to keep exploring new techniques, materials and sizes.

In her most recent series ‘Phantasmagoria’, Sofie explores phenomena of dreamlike hallucinations, inspired by the state in between consciousness and unconsciousness in which the initial visualizations of her paintings are born. Enigmatic moments that can hardly be explained in words are conveyed with oil paint, concluding in a colorful and fantastical surge of energy on canvas.
