Sofie van Thiel (b. 1997) is a Rotterdam-based artist working primarily with the medium of painting. Since graduating from the Willem de Kooning Academy in 2022, her work deals with translating daily impressions and feelings to paint. The painting process is like a dialogue between material and maker. Sofie experiments with how paint, textures and drawing materials react to each other and decides to interfere intuitively, ever in search for balance. As a result the paintings are layered and full of movement, conveying enigmatic moments that can hardly be explained with words.
